TSPI Development Corporation is a non-stock, non-profit development
organization established on October 9, 1981 and duly registered
with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The
acronym, TSPI stands for "Bridge to Progress" (Tulay sa
Pag-unlad Inc.) which signifies the developmental vision of the
organization to provide the poor with opportunities to lead self-sufficient,
dignified and responsible lives. TSPI promotes the development of
micro and small entrepreneurs through a broad range of financial
and complementary services on which potentials for income generation
and capability build-up can be harnessed.
As an ecumenical organization, TSPI stands by the four core values
of servanthood, integrity, stewardship and excellence. Through its
work, TSPI hopes to pass on these values so clients can realize
fullness of life, which material growth alone cannot bring about.
A Board of Trustees governs TSPI. The Board is composed of men
and women with solid experience and expertise in banking, finance,
corporate law and governance. TSPI is headed by an Executive Director
who is supported by a team, as of 30 July 2004, of 624 personnel
dispersed through a network of branches and a Headquarter based
in Makati City.
From a client base of 25 small entrepreneurs during the initial
year, FY 1981-1982, TSPI has expanded its outreach to 95,910 active
clients as of June 2004. It managed a loan portfolio of Php 349
million (US$6.23 million) with a repayment rate of 99.4% and a portfolio-at-risk
(above 30 days) of 1.7%, as of June 2004.
TSPI has become a viable and sustainable NGO. As of June 30, 2004,
its operating self-sufficiency ratio stood at 125.2% while its financial
self-sufficiency level is at 118.2%.
In addition to serving low-income groups, TSPI advocates for the
development of the Philippine microfinance sector. It is a founding
member of three local networks of microfinance institutions, namely:
the Microfinance Council of the Philippines, Inc. or MCPI, the Philippine
Network for Helping the Hardcore Poor or PHILNET and the Alliance
of Philippine Partners in Enterprise Development or APPEND. Together
with MCPI, TSPI promotes best practices in microfinance through
a set of performance standards developed specifically for local
microfinance non-governmental organizations.
TSPI is also a member of recognized international networks in microfinance,
and these are: the Microfinance Network (MFN), Opportunity International
(OI) Network, and the Credit and Savings for the Hardcore Poor (CASHPOR).
TSPI is a recipient of the Overall Performance Award for the years
2000-2001 from the Opportunity International (OI) Network, besting
38 other OI implementing partners in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe
and Latin America. It continues to hold on to the distinction as
of the latest review period covering the first semester of the year
2002.
